The Lee County Youth Center is a local non-profit organization started by Giddings community members back in 2009. Former Giddings EDC Director Joyce Bise was instrumental in helping write for non-profit status as well as guiding the original program design. Then in 2011 the doors were open.
Giddings ISD had provided a portion of the former Giddings Elementary School on 1010 E, Industry for the use of LCYC. This included the gym, the former cafeteria and kitchen, along with classrooms, bathrooms and the original library.
As of July 2019, we are in the First Presbyterian Church due to the condition of the GISD building.
Over the past 10 years, the LCYC Board has written grants, solicited funds through fundraisers, accepted donations and charged nominal fees for attendance in order to provide new air conditioning units, a partial roof placement, improve kitchen and bathroom facilities and generally provided for many of the maintenance needs and the operation of the program.
The LCYC Board has worked to ensure that the center is a safe and nurturing environment at a very reasonable cost for our children. Goals of the board are to serve 100 students and to provide first time jobs for many of our Lee County HS students, including Dime Box and Lexington. Since the opening we have been blessed with an average of 60-80 students utilizing this program.
“Working with GISD, we have been able to provide transportation after school to the center daily. Working with the federal food nutrition program we can provide a nutritious snack that is free for our children each day. There is also a snack bar where children may purchase at an additional low cost. Many of our snacks are donated by local churches and generous community members.
This program also provides homework assistance three days a week in our Homework Center. Due to our, many volunteers providing this service, as well as our Daily staff. LCYC always seeks volunteers, so anyone interested may stop by the Center and fill out a volunteer application.
This program serves students from completed Kindergarten thru 8th grade and older students are welcome to volunteer.
The LCYC continues to grow and serve the children of our community. As a non-profit organization designed and developed by local citizens it is meeting the after school and summer recreational needs of many families and has done so successfully since the doors opened in 2011, thanks to the cooperation between Giddings ISD and the LCYC Board.
